about

DP ARCHIVAL RELEASE 003 =======

In spring 2011, Duane Pitre and ensemble recorded nine takes of his “Feel Free” composition over the course of two days at D. James Goodwin’s Isokon recording studio in Woodstock, NY. The primary purpose for capturing this many takes was the fact that the composition relies heavily on rule-based improvisation and although this framework is strict in some aspects, other looser aspects result in each performance yielding different results.

It was decided that there were five “keeper” takes out of the nine. A couple of days after the session, Goodwin sent Pitre rough “reference” mixes of the five takes so he could sift through them and choose what portions from each take would be used in the composite that would become the final album version of the composition. In the end, seven separate segments were chosen from the five “keeper” takes. The “Feel Free” studio album is a collage of these seven segments (masterfully spliced together by Goodwin).

The five tracks that make up this archive album are the very reference mixes that Goodwin sent Pitre at the onset of April 2011. Aside from some minor very minor EQ, these rough-mixes are unedited, unproduced, unmastered, and are 100% live with no overdubs. If you are familiar with the finished studio album, you’ll hear all of its musical moments/material spread out amongst these five tracks.
